Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math and English have document projectors, humanities has a flat screen TV. Science classrooms have the standard transparency projectors equipped in every room but no way to truly bring material to life. No watching videos, interactive websites, Jeopardy, or even just seeing pictures in our notes.

My students are excited about science, often telling me it's their favorite class because we get to do labs and there's a lot of opportunity for them to discuss and be engaged.

They know how important science is but after seeing high tech devices in their other classrooms, they wonder why their science and technology class isn't given the same tools. My students live in a largely low income community where often their only exposure to technology is in the classroom. A huge majority of them are on free lunch and they're doing everything they can to be accepted into high schools that will give them better futures. I want to give them exposure to the tools they'll be given at these high schools and teach them how to properly utilize them so that my students will not be at a disadvantage when they get there.

My Project

Learning about erosion without seeing a picture of the Grand Canyon? Learning about the solar system without a picture of it? No wonder it's hard to get students engaged on days where we are not doing experiments, but rather, taking notes and doing other activities. The projector would allow me to truly bring the material alive: show students how what we're learning about it not only present in an experiment but in the real world, all day, everyday. This projector will allow me to show my class videos, websites, and pictures and allow them to get a better grasp on the material we're learning. I think that this project will most benefit my English Language Learners and Special Education Students. I see approximately 20 students in each group each day (out of 90 students) by allowing them to connect pictures to the words, I will undoubtedly give these students a tool that they can use to grasp the material in a more meaningful way.

My students may never see the phenomena we learn about every day.

By donating to this project, you will allow them to have a greater understanding of the world around them, a greater appreciation of science, and give them the tools they need for success this year and in all their following years of education.
