My Students
Kindles represent the latest in educational technology. With their interactive displays and innovative new functions, Kindles are revolutionizing the way students learn to read. Help my students join the revolution!
I teach first grade special education in a low-income New York City public school.
Many of my students enter my classroom as struggling readers. At age 6, they are already coping with a variety of challenges such as learning disabilities and language barriers, making learning to read all the more difficult. My students are from families struggling to make ends meet and many do not have access to books at home--let alone computers or e-readers like the Kindle. Because many of my students don't have books at home, literacy instruction in the classroom is crucial.
My Project
The Kindle provides students access to literally thousands of books on one device. For a student who has never owned a single book of her own (something that, unfortunately, is true for several students in my classroom), this would be truly life-changing. In addition to opening up a whole new world of books to my students, the Kindle will also help improve my students' decoding and comprehension skills through tools like the "text-to-speech" function, a revolutionary tool that allows students to have unfamiliar words read aloud to them with the click of a button. With Kindles in the classroom, my students will be able to read more fluently, recognize more sight words on their own, and--most importantly--become inspired to love reading.
Learning to read is every child's right, and first grade is a critical time for literacy instruction.
Because of state budget cuts, we have had to make do for too long with the outdated technology we have in the classroom. Without your help, my students would never have access to resources like these--resources that will enable my students to reach new heights in reading.
