Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a neighborhood where there is no enrichment activities after school for them to participate in. I know that they would appreciate playing chess just as I did through grade and high school.
The students I am currently teaching live in the poorest section of our city and state.
Although the area is improving, it is still also one of the most dangerous. These students have had drugs and guns in their lives for as long as they remember. Despite this fact, they have to be some of the sweetest and greatest kids that I have ever taught. They always try to look on the bright side of things and try to dream big when their lives will allow them to.
My Project
With these resources I am hoping to teach the students how to play a game that they can take with them for the rest of their lives. The skills they learn through chess will carry over into our math and science classroom. They really need to develop their critical thinking skills and piecing together a puzzle. Doing this through a game is a great way for students that can not connect with the school work and are not "math people". The ten chess boards will allow us to have multiple children playing and analyzing chess games. The starter books will be good for the students who have never played chess before. This will let them take the learning into their own hands by reading how the pieces move, the importance of each piece and basic strategy!
My project is personally important to me because I played competitive chess all through high school.
I have personally seen how the game of chess can turn a friend from someone who could hardly care about school into someone who looked forward to the next day so they could get back on the chess board.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
