My students need solar racer kits to understand what it means to build something for themselves.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have endured a great hardship over their four years at this school. They have had a mixed bag of science teachers and hardly have been able to work on any kind of experiment. To let them build something and take it home would truly mean the world to them.
My 8th grade Math/Science classroom is definitely changing into a place where students can think critically and ask the all important question: Why?
They are asking this question and better yet other students are answering! My student population is primarily Latino and there are also some African American students. The school is in the poorest section of Pennsylvania and the students are excited about a field trip to just about anywhere. They do not know much else outside of their immediate area and this is why I want this type of resource. I have invested in small kits like this before and they light up at the opportunity to try and construct something. They can really see the fruits of their labor.
My Project
The students will be able to walk through the important thinking questions that are what science is about. They will walk through the scientific method and figure out exactly what these kits are all about. They will be able to develop high level critical thinking skills and have a little fun afterward. As they present the findings, the "best" presentations will be allowed to bring home the car they have just made. When I was in 8th grade I was able to make a CO2 powered car and it really turned me to science and I hope that this will do the same for them! Not to mention I still have mine sitting up on my bookshelves and I have to hear "I WANT TO DO THAT!" from my students.
My students will have something tangible that shows the power of the sun.
They will have the experience of building something and some of them will be allowed to take it home. They will be able to wake up and see their finished item and just be proud of something in their lives. This is for students who have had little to no science exposure over the course of their first 8 years of schooling. I thank you for anything that you can do to help my young scientists take the next step in life!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
