My Students

Imagine learning about Europeans sailing to North America and not being able to see where Europe or North America are in the world.

I teach in an inclusive classroom in an urban district.

My fifth graders are inquisitive and eager to learn. History is one of their favorite classes because they are able to see connections to what they are learning and how they live. They love being able to learn about different time periods and different countries.

My Project

My students need both a world and US map to study US history. By having a large map in the classroom, the students will be able to visualize the location of the places we have been talking about. The students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of why it took explorers a long time to get from Europe to North America. The students will be able to gain a better understanding of geography in general and will be able to have an educated conversation both in school and out about geography.

This project will really allow students to be able to have a deeper understanding of the topics we are covering in history.

It will provide them with a visual that is important to the topics we are studying. It will allow the students to have discussions about geographical topics without guessing where different countries are located. This knowledge will stay with the students long after they have left fifth grade.
