My Students
I am a Pre-K teacher in East New York, Brooklyn. Many of my students come to school with very little letter knowledge. In Pre-K we don't have any formal phonics program. The materials that are available come from a variety of resources.
I truly have the best job in the world.
I get to get up every morning and teach the best 4 year olds in the world. My students are the most eager learners I've ever met. They come from homes where learning is not a priority. The majority of them enter school without any letter or phonics background.
My Project
Having Zoo-phonics in my classroom will give my students the leg up they need for kindergarten and the rest of their academic career. Zoo-phonics is a method developed to make children strong readers and spellers using a “phono” (hearing), “oral” (speaking), “visual” (seeing), “kinesthetic” (moving), and “tactile” (touching)—whole brain approach. Students actually learn the sounds of the alphabet and advanced phonemic concepts through an easily understood, concrete method of presentation.
If I am able to give my students a strong letter and phonics background before they enter into kindergarten, their teachers will have a much easier time teaching them everything else they need to learn.
I can't begin to tell you the difference a strong phonics program in early childhood education would make.
A program like this will give them the strong foundation they need to be successful readers for life.
