My Students
Make a difference to students in a "high poverty" school! I am a first year teacher in a low-income school district with very few materials for the students. Outside of the textbooks, which students have to share, there are no sets of classroom books for teaching literature.
Most of my students come from low income and disadvantaged homes, and their exposure to culture outside of rural Sampson County is minimal at best.
Introducing the students to authors of world literature and exposing them to broader concepts introduced in that literature is absolutely essential to me as a first year teacher.
My Project
My students need 40 copies of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" so that we may study the theme of conformity versus individuality. Through the reading of "Brave New World," I am hoping to introduce my students to a thematic unit I have created called "Conformity versus Individuality: Empowering Students as Unique Critical Thinkers." The students will complete the unit of study, and their culminating project will be writing creative, extended definitions of both "individuality" and "conformity".
Please, please support this project!
These materials will mean so much to my students; students who have so few resources with which to learn, yet desire learning all the same. I have convinced these students that there are other worlds to explore through literature; please help me prove it to them.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
