Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the excitement of hearing a story and then realizing you can read the story yourself? Children are enchanted by the spoken and written word. Being able to listen to stories multiple times bridges this gap and encourages literacy growth!
I teach Kindergarten in a high poverty school district.
The majority of my students come from non-English speaking homes. Budget cuts have greatly reduced support staff and services for the students. Literature and being read to are my students' avenue to building background, vocabulary and almost all academic skills!
My Project
Through the generous donors of Donor's Choose, our current listening center (that only plays tapes) will be replaced by a dual CD and tape player. Unfortunately, we have not added to our Listening Library in many years and our existing machine ate many of our tapes! Adding a Listening Library of books on Compact Disc will add independence and richness to our Literacy program.
In addition, this donation includes "Read to Read" books the students will actually begin decoding as they learn their letters and sounds. Finally, included is a set of books and Cd's be used in Math, therefore giving the most possible impact to our previous donation.
Through this donation, my students will have independent access to hearing stories as they follow along in a book.
They will recognize the important connection between the word and text as they become lifelong readers and learners!
