My Students

Do you remember what it is like to struggle with reading? Actually, I don't. My mother is an English teacher, and I slid easily into the text world. I DON'T remember what it is like to not recognize a word when I see it. I don't remember reading whole paragraphs, and not comprehending.

However, this is the case with many of my students.

Only 1/6th of my 133 9th graders read on grade level. As their Environmental Science teacher, I get to avoid some of the frustration of reading by doing experiments and other hands on activities. But this lack of literacy skill comes back to haunt the students when it is time to write up their labs and explain their thinking. To combat this, our 9th grade team decided to focus our year on building literacy. All of the core teachers are embedding literacy strategies into their curriculum. Specifically, the Global History teacher and I are practicing active reading and annotating; we are reading and summarizing; we are reading and questioning... In our planning, we've also re-written many of our assignments to have different reading levels of the same content. Though this is a lot of extra work it seems to be making a huge difference in lowering the frustration and raising the confidence in our students!

My Project

Now, we'd like to take this one step farther! For our next project, we would like to add a COLORING component to their reading activities. The HUMAN EVOLUTION COLORING BOOK is a book of 200+ 1-page articles accompanied by a page where students color matching vocabulary words and images. It may sound silly--but I used the HUMAN ANATOMY COLORING BOOK when I was in college--and it was extremely useful in helping to paint a picture in my head of the hundreds of vocabulary words that make up your body! Also, this requested project is a little bit different, because I would like to GIVE each child 1 pencil pouch with a pencil sharpener and 10 colored pencils--for KEEPS! That way they can work on this project at home--and also use the colored pencils for other classes. I've added THE GEOGRAPHY COLORING BOOK to my cart, and I will share this with the Global teacher--she has said they are struggling with understanding how geographic features affect the development of history.

This project is important because it will allow struggling readers another access point into reading!

We are an Arts & Media school, so by sneaking into literacy the back way (coloring), through something they are interested in--we may be able to start to close the gap! Also, if I were a student and people cared enough about me to donate school supplies, I would feel pretty special! Thanks for your consideration! Help support my amazing students!
