My Students

Do you remember what it felt like the first time you were able to pick up a book and read it on your own? Here's your chance to help my students achieve that feeling!

I teach first grade special education in a low-income New York City public school.

Many of my students enter my classroom as struggling readers. At age 6, they are already coping with a variety of challenges such as learning disabilities and language barriers, making learning to read all the more difficult. My students are from families struggling to make ends meet and, unfortunately, in these difficult economic times, books aren't always the top priority on every family's list. Because many of my students don't have books at home, their only opportunity to access books is at school.

My Project

The Leapfrog Tag Reading System pens will enable my students to receive the help they need to finally read books on their own. They simply hold the pen up to the words that they can't read and the pen helps them to figure it out. With the help of the Leapfrog Tag Reading System, my students will gain new confidence in their ability as readers. As they become more confident in their ability to read, books will begin to become a source of joy for my students instead of a source of defeat.

Each Leapfrog Tag Reading System is very expensive.

Without your help my students will simply not have access to these materials due to the cost. School budget cuts have caused us to lose a significant portion of our funding, especially in the lower grades. These pens are a fun way for students to learn. The best way to teach children is to let them have fun while doing so! Please help!!
