The Bunsen burner is the quintessential chemistry equipment, and with a brand new lab at our disposal, how could we not have Bunsen burners?!
My students come from inner-city Brooklyn and attend a small public high school.
They've never experienced a science lab class before and I want them to leave my class with a conceptual knowledge of chemistry as well as the practical knowledge of lab skills.
My Project
Bunsen burners are necessary to teach some of the basic concepts of chemistry, like properties of matter. Questions about Bunsen burners will appear on the standardized test associated with a high school chemistry course and, if they are to be considered by a competitive college or university, they must do well on their standardized tests. Additionally, learning how to light and use a Bunsen burner is a standard lab skill. Without it, my students will be lacking a foundational skill when they enter the college science arena.
Donating Bunsen burners to my classroom will round out the amazing gift that our lab grant has been to our school.
Students who are sincerely interested in pursuing applied sciences after high school will build a strong foundation of lab skills and gain the knowledge necessary for success on the state and national exams.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
