My Students
Being in a safe learning environment is a priority when kids do chemistry labs in a non-science established room. Students are face with a room that is both the chemistry classroom and chemistry lab. Usually we a chemistry lab is a separate room is already equipped with chemistry safety equipment.
I have about 30 students in my classroom and lab for 2 block periods.
My students are primarily low income African American and Latino students. My student are primarily junior and seniors in class who needing to take chemistry which is the only physical science class available at this charter school. They all attend Leadership High School located in San Francisco, California.
My Project
By having safety equipments in the room, I can teach students how to use to equipment. Just in case an accident does happen in the chemistry classroom/lab, students are able to practice some social responsibility and are empowered to use it to stop any further damages from happening.
This provides me a sense of relief that I have such equipment around for our students safety and this will certainly decrease the liability just in case an accident does happen.
Before learning chemistry, the teacher must empower students to take responsibility in creating and maintaining that safe learning environment.
Teaching students how to use the equipment is not only educating them but it also means putting the responsibility on them to use the equipment if needed. In doing so, we our empower our students to take care of each other.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
