Biotechnology Research

My Students

Biotechnology is the job market of the future offering an array of jobs ranging in skills technician to PhD Scientists. Preparing students, we need to take the Chevron Classroom Challenge and teach biotechnology hands-on experiments protocols for DNA and protein research for biofuels and medicine.

Half of the students in my class range from 9th to 12th graders.

They are in the Delta Performing Arts Academy, a pathway that moved onto our campus from a small independent site as a result of budget cuts in our district. These students are required to have a rigorous project based curriculum that incorporates hands-on experiences and to complete 3 years of math and three years of science. The other half are general population students that are primarily in the 9th grade. All classes are a mixture of these two groups and range from special needs, underperforming students to students who have high aspirations for their achievements and future careers. Theses classes also have a diverse cultural mix of students and are representative of the schools over all demographics.

My Project

My students need a Plant Biotechnology: DNA Extraction Kit and 6 Genetic Construction Kits to do hands on lab activities that are current with modern scientific research. Students will be conducting research using Biotechnology to learn how to extract biofuels from plants. They will also learn how to determine the evolutionary relationship in different fish species by comparing proteins from their muscle tissues. Both of the labs will require them to learn and practice standard biotechnology protocols. Learning these skills as well as being able to understand the concepts, vocabulary and application of DNA and proteins opens avenues for career pathways they may not have had any exposure to without these lab experiences.

Especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, the center for Biotechnology research for the world, we need to prepare our students to understand the emerging job market for biotechnology.

This requires teaching what the research looks like and why it is important. It is my dream to have a biotechnology class offering research based activities and preparing my students to pursue this field of education and job market.
