My Students
Do you remember after school activities at your middle school? There were many teams and clubs to choose. These activities make students feel they are part of the school; helps them to be proud of their school. Our students do not have that. We have no teams or clubs. Please help us change that.
My students attend a school in an area of town known for gang activity, drugs and crime.
The school population is made up of 99% African American students, and each student qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Most of our students are in one-parent homes where mom is struggling to balance raising children and going to school or work. My students are very bright and many of them do not see a real future for themselves. Exposing the students to positive experiences which include the arts, cooperation, and achieving goals will help them to see that their future is filled with promise.
My Project
Have you seen the movie "Drum Line"? The lead character says something that really struck home. He said something like, "I never thought about college until someone told me that playing the drums would get me there". This is the opportunity I hope to give my students. Having a drum corps will teach the students teamwork and discipline while giving them a creative outlet that they can feel proud of.
This project is so crucial for my students.
They are looking forward to getting started. They are looking for something to choose rather than the gang life that is so prevalent in their neighborhoods. They want to be successful. They just don't know how to get there. We need to get the drum corps going quickly before we loose anymore young men to the lure of the streets. Please help me help the kids see there is another way. Show them that there are people who care about their future.
