My Students
Biotechnology rapidly changes and therefore requires necessary changes. Imagine trying to keep a steady temperature with a hot-plate. This lab equipment would be an essential piece for laboratories activities to be more efficient and accurate. Labs would be more engaging and beneficial.
My students live in an urban environment.
Their reading levels vary and sometimes circumstances at home generate missed class-time. The school is an inner city public school that is hungry for resources. The students in my class are AP and are in the class because they want exposure and rigor.
By helping out, these students will get to experience using laboratory equipment used in most university, government, and private sector labs. This will engage and motivate the students to explore science and attend class. Furthermore, we need to engage more individuals in science as statistics show we have a void of students seeking a graduate degree for biology, chemistry, or physics.
My Project
The activity will allow students to genetically alter bacteria by splicing genes from a jelly fish and inserting those genes into the bacteria. The bacteria will then glow demonstrating to students applied biotechnology. Through this, I hope to motivate and engage the students to pursue science and become life-long learners in Biology.
The students will learn about the genetic code and be able to compare and contrast how organisms are similar and alike. Finally, this will give students the opportunity to understand how future medicines and technology will impact themselves and society. An foundation for biotechnology techniques will be understood that can give my AP Biology students help once they enter college.
This will make a huge difference by generating more accurate results in my lab activity.
This is considered a classic experiment by Biology standards but fails to show up in any curriculum at the high school level. All of the AP Biology Labs have been performed since the 1960s. Without any innovations, my students will be stuck instead of moving forward. This piece of equipment can inspire and generate academic interest in my students.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
