My Students
The major challenge facing many of my students is that they are unengaged in school. Many of them struggle with math and writing and they look to science class as a place where they can participate in hands-on learning.
Our students are extremely diverse.
We have gifted scholars as well as kids who struggle with almost any academic pursuit. The is a K-8 public school and our classrooms are inclusive. This is the last year of middle school, and the 8th graders tend to get antsy- and especially the struggling students can enter a really difficult time as they prepare for high school. I'm hoping that a forensics unit will be just the thing to keep them active and engaged as we end the year.
My Project
The students will be collecting all kinds of evidence at a crime scene: hair samples, fingerprints, bones,DNA, powders and footprints. Using the various forensics kits, the students will be responsible for collecting evidence just like a detective, and in interpreting what they find. With the crime scene tape and markers it will seem just like real life. They will work in teams and will use tools such as microscopes, cameras, and fingerprint brushes.
These 8th graders will learn about both science as a practice as well as science content such as DNA and cell biology through their study of forensics. Also- they will enjoy it!
I feel that it is my job to make science class something that the students look forward to.
In order to create an engaging, vibrant, educational environment we need supplies. They are already looking forward to a unit on forensics and these supplies will truly make it happen.
