Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Family Math Night is an event that allows students and their families (parents and siblings) an opportunity to participate in a station-based math fair. Four stations would be set up in the cafeteria. Each station would target a different math objective. The activity would allow all family members to learn, thus enabling the parents to better understand the math that children are expected to learn in class. Having taught 5th grade math for 21 years, I know that math expectations and objectives have changed. Some parents have difficulty helping their children at home with homework. I would like to implement the Family Math night as a monthly (or at least bi-monthly) event. I will teach approximately 100-130 students starting in August. Every student that I teach will be invited to the event. The Family Math Night would be conducted in both English and Spanish for those students with Spanish-speaking parents. Some of the activities will use manipulatives, such as dominoes and dice, while others will use consumables like cardstock, index cards and construction paper. I want to have this event not only to help parents help their children, but also to foster the communication and the connection between the school and the parents. Thank you for considering this event.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
