FULLY FUNDED! Ms. F.'s classroom raised $1,397
This project is fully funded
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to submit this proposal. It is uplifting to know that there are people and companies who donate so that students can receive supplementary resources that they would not otherwise be able to use.
I am in my tenth year as an 8th grade reading teacher in a rural school in southeast Louisiana and I love my job! All 8th graders in Louisiana must take the rigorous high-stakes LEAP test and must pass this test in order to advance to the next grade. Each year, I must teach my students to analyze literature and to think critically. I also must guide them in writing meaningful thought-filled answers for constructed-response items on activities throughout the year because so much of the LEAP test requires written responses. Yes, there are days when the students and I dread the routine but necessary "read, think, analyze, and respond" activities. But I stress the importance of these practices and my students refocus and get the work done. (I am proud to say that my students are consistently in the top three schools in our parish for the highest scores for the Language Arts LEAP Test.)
Because my students work so hard, I would like to have a projector in my classroom so that I enrich the students experiences in literature.
With the projector (and using the classroom computer and tv that I already have) I could introduce literary selections using pictures of the authors and bring in background information that students would not otherwise get to have or see.
For example, my students read the short story, "The Great Rat Hunt" which is set in Chinatown. With a classroom projector, students could see pictures and information about various Chinatowns throughout the United States. They could learn about Chinese cuisine and see pictures of Chinese dishes. I could also access sites about Chinese immigration and how Chinese immigrants became a part of history in our United States. The main character in the story has childhood asthma. Students could see pictures of how asthma affects the bronchial tubes of those affected by asthma.
Having a projector would greatly enhance the classroom experience and help propel valuable discussions by students. Giving students this extra information would raise student interest in reading the selections also. We could also keep abreast of current events and branch off with writing activities. The possibilities and benefits of using a classroom projector are endless!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
