My Students
We want our students to work hard and play hard because at the end of the day, they are still children! These games would go a long way in promoting an after school community where students would have a safe environment to interact with their peers.
Our students are 6th graders who are brand new to middle school and on the verge of adolescence.
It's a difficult time having to adjust to a new environment in such a big school. As children living in a very large city, finding a safe place to relax at the end of the day can be challenging. My colleagues and I often volunteer our time and classrooms after school to students who need extra help with school work and for those who just need somewhere to go. Our students are 11 and 12 years old. Many are new to the country, some are advanced but all are very gifted in their own right.
My Project
These games will help promote literacy skills with our students, especially our ESL students. We realized this last year when several of our newly English-speaking students loved to play these games. We would often pair them up or challenge the students ourselves. After a while, the students improved their vocabulary skills and developed their own strategies, making it possible to beat their teachers in some cases! The games are skillful and create some healthy competition. In addition, our children were able to make new friends with students they normally wouldn't see during the school day. In addition, we can use these games as rewards during our advisory periods with them.
Kids love to be challenged!
And that's exactly what these games can do for them. The games are a clever way for students to learn from one another while building grammar skills. This project will TRULY bring fun to many 11 and 12 year olds!
