This is my second year teaching second grade in Cabrini Green. All of my students are African American and all are on free or reduced lunch.
Many of my students are struggling in their basic studies: reading, writing and math. Some become easily frustrated and don?t often feel successful. When we engage in hands-on science activities, though, those students are more involved and interested. Science is a way for them to feel confident in school.
The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum has a program called "Science on the Go!" where outreach educators from the museum enter the classroom and work alongside classroom teachers. They model effective inquiry-based teaching strategies, cooperative work, and hands-on activities that support student achievement. All the lessons are developed to meet current Illinois Learning Standards for Science.
?Science on the Go!? includes curriculum, materials for every student, five outreach visits from a museum educator, professional development for the teacher, and a field trip.
Every child should look forward to a pleasant experience in school. Help me boost students' curiosity and desire to learn.
