My Students
Students need to learn how to use data to drive their decision making. In order to become a consumers of data, students need to be able to analysis data efficiently. Students struggle, mathematically, with the detailed steps and procedures of data analysis. These calculators will aid in analysis.
My school is a public high school located in Minnesota.
Our school has a large number of lower socially-economic students. Our school also has a large number of English Language Learners. I teach BOTH Advanced Placement and regular statistic classes. These calculators will be shared between these two classes. The calculators will also be able to be "checked out" overnight by students allowing them to use the technology at home.
My Project
The use of these calculators will allow students to perform analysis that is quick and accurate. This will free up time for the students to ultimately make DECISIONS from their data. The calculators are equipped with powerful data analysis tools that will allow a more in-depth look at statistics. These calculators ALL have the ability to be projected for student-generated analysis. Students will be asked to project their data and analysis while explaining to the class their thinking.
Many students seem to shy away from statistics because of their lack of confidence in their math skills. They have too often been told "your steps were right, you just made a math mistake". Employing technology once a student understands the required steps and HAS done them correctly by hand, allows students to be confident in the analysis and empowers them make decisions.
These students represent the future.
Most are planning on attending 4-year universities (some as the first in their family). They will need the ability to analysis data in ALL fields of study. I hope to empower students to THINK about decisions and see statistics (and math overall) as a TOOL for them to use in life. These students will face challenges and problems that are unknown and by teaching them to THINK about and ANALYSIS data I hope to make them consumers of information.
