Science Notebooks For Budding Scientists

My students need 30 science journals, 30 clipboards, and a pencil sharpener to get off to a great start this fall.

My Students

Ever have a kid ask you "Why?" In our class we get to explore the answers to that question through Science labs every week!

My students come from low income homes and find it difficult to get the basic supplies they need to be successful in class.

We work in the Science lab once a week in addition to lessons and videos about Science topics. Our Science journals become a great resource throughout the year.

My Project

With these basic supplies, you will be providing a place for my students to record their observations, make predictions and hypotheses, and contain our photographs and explanations. We use these journals to take notes from reference books, textbooks, and videos. We photograph experiments and construct diagrams about all of the Science topics of the year. These journals will allow my class to truly be organized with their learning and extend their curiosity. Clipboards allow us to travel to the outdoor classroom and observe wildlife as well as plants. That portability becomes an important tool for understanding the world around us. An electric pencil sharpener is needed so that all students are ready to record their observations.

Science is one subject that is increasingly skipped in our elementary schools.

I have found that by observing an apple tree and discussing the life cycle is good, but much better when students are required to take notes and explain the why. Too often students living in poverty are not challenged to reach higher levels of learning and science is the perfect vehicle to require more from my students.
