My Students

Growing as writers is a huge part of our kindergarten classrooms. Nothing excites a student more than publishing a "real" book written and illustrated by him/herself.

I teach 5 year-old Kindergarten in rural South Carolina.

My students are bright and inquisitive. We are a Title One school with 93% of Kindergarten students receiving free/reduced lunch. Our school was featured on South Carolina's ETV's "Corridor of Shame." All of our funds for this school year have been frozen.

My Project

From the very first day of school, my students begin writing in journals. We write in them at least three times a week. It is amazing to watch their progress during the school year. We have a wonderful book binding system. Each year, our students make a hard back bound book to present to their parents at our end of the year celebration. The students work very hard writing and illustrating these books. Their finished products are beyond belief. We are out of the binders and will not be able to continue this project without your help.

Students work harder when working toward a visible goal.

When shown samples of books that past students have made, they work hard to make their book the best ever. With your support, each student in our kindergarten will be able to make a "real", bound, hardback book to present to his/her parents or other caregiver. The pride on their faces is priceless.
