Years ago our school had a music program where children received basic fundamental music instruction as well as a chance to learn to play instruments & join an award-winning band. Over the years cuts in funding have depleted the opportunities in music ed. our kids need. Help us bring back the music!
My 4th/5th grade music students are eager, hard working kids who are excited about the renewal of a music program in our small, rural, public eastern KY school.
Our now K-5 school is, in fact, where many of our students' parents attended as well and were fortunate to have had the opportunity to play in a band from elementary age through high school.
With budget cuts throughout the years our music program has suffered for too long. So after years of having no established music program, this year I started an after-school beginning band. With the help of monetary and instrument donations we now have 15 new 5th grade musicians at our school. With their enthusiasm and success they have inspired many of our 4th graders to also want to join the band!
My Project
Unfortunately the price of a new band instrument can be too expensive for some families and I don't want that fact to hinder a child's chances of experiencing all the benefits that come from learning an instrument and being part of a band. Nearly all our beginning band members play an instrument that was donated! Without such wonderful, generous folks many of our students would not have been able to experience this wonderful opportunity and feel the joy and success of learning those instruments, playing as an ensemble, and performing for our school and community.
So far, our little band has accomplished sharing the joy of music and school spirit at our pep rallies, ballgames, and school programs. We want to continue to expand on those experiences by also preparing for a school spring concert in a few months.
By helping us acquired our much needed school band instruments you will be providing students, who may not otherwise afford this opportunity, a chance to not only explore their otherwise untapped musical talents but also experience commitment, determination, success, pride, and happiness.
Research shows that music education can help a child's academic achievements and help develop more well-rounded individuals and citizens for our communities.
