I teach Title I Reading and Math for 2nd through 6th Grade. The students use Accelerated Reader as part of the Reading Curriculum. I am also in charge of the Accelerated Reader Club after school that is held in the library every Wednesday. We have over 30 students that stay and read for 30 minutes and take quizzes on the books they read. These students range from kindergarten through sixth grade. The Accelerated Reader program has grown from last year and is a giant success at our school. The students look forward to this time every Wednesday when they can come into the library and read independently or with partners. They have the opportunity to read, take quizzes, and receive points for their success.
In our building, we have an Accelerated Reader Wall. Each student reads books and takes quizzes. Once they get 5 points, their name goes on the wall and they get a prize. The students continue to get prizes for 10, 15, 25, 50, 100, and 200 points. The students love having their name on the Wall! We would love to give the students a pencil that shows the success of their reading when they reach their point levels. If they could have a pencil to remind them that READERS ARE LEADERS, they would read more and move across on the wall faster.
Accelerated Reader Club meets on Wednesdays after school in the library. These students read books and take quizzes on the books they read. Every time they get to a certain level they receive a prize. Getting the pencils would allow more students to receive prizes at more levels. This would show how important it is for the students to read and move across to the other levels on the Accelerated Reader Wall.
Accelerated Reader promotes reading throughout the school. Since reading is so important, giving the pencils that say READERS ARE LEADERS as incentives shows the students that reading, at any level, is a success!
