Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Science at Pugh Elementary in Houston, Texas. It is a magnet school for Science and Computer Technology. We have a beautiful habitat that is just outside the windows of my science lab on the school grounds. Just across the street, however, there is a factory were many of the students' parents work. What I would like to do is teach the students about the chemicals in the environment.
My proposal is to have a field demonstration lab testing that compares the water samples from the school's natural habitat to the factory's water samples that flow in a draining ditch adjacent to the school grounds.
This would be a great way for the 4th and 5th grade students to conduct a scientific investigation on water quality. After their research, the students will present their findings to the first through third graders in a news investigation format. They could show their findings in a collaborated way expressing teamwork. They could learn how to collect and analyze data. They could learn the importance of chemicals in the environment, as well as the effects of pollution from their chemical samples. Then they could demonstrate their knowledge in scientific methods using technology via power point slideshow for our community.
If only I could obtain enough supplies for the 60 students to conduct their own private investigation field activity, it would be a small blessing. The benefits will far outweigh the cost.
