Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher in an urban school district in PA. I work with 27 students, and teach Mathematics, English/Language Arts, and Social Studies. My school is in a very high-need community; I am lucky if my students come to school with a pencil each day. I am focusing this request to appeal to all of my readers specifically because of an interest of reading along with a CD.
This year, I have focused a lot of effort in getting my students more interested in reading for fun. We are participating in our school's 100 book challenge, where each student is challenged to read 100 books by the end of the school year. Some of my students fall a little below a 4th grade reading level, and too many fall a lot below a 4th grade reading level. Unfortunately state tests do not take this lack of ability into consideration and all students are testing on the same level even if they are unable to read on that level. Sets of books are golden in my classroom and my students respect and take care of the few sets I do have and have shared with them.
I feel that if I were able to give my lower-level readers texts with the listening CD to play as they read the story, they will be able to hear how words are supposed to sound, and in turn increase their reading fluency. Besides increasing their reading fluency and comprehension, they will also feel proud that they are also able to read books similar to ones my on-level students are able to read. This will increase their motivation and courage to attempt to read similar leveled books, along with their ability to understand similar vocabulary and deeper level thinking about the text. I also am looking to receive a bookcase for my students to display and keep our materials safe and organized.
As I said, books are golden to my students and with this gift, you would be giving my students an opportunity to feel great about their ability to read these stories and feel empowered to continue to read other texts on their academic level. My students have already taken an interest in reading, and these resources and materials will only further excite them about reading. Remember, reading is FUNdamental!
