How can we teach respect, dignity, and the payoff of hard work? Through a drumline of course!
I teach music to wonderful 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in an Urban high needs school. These children make me smile everyday and have shown their ability to care for and support each other on a daily basis. I feel as though they need an outlet for them to perform. I believe a drumline will give them the balance between performance and structure that these kids need to carry them forward in life.
Every day I witness my students drumming and stomping rhythmically. They are natural musicians and performers. We have no supplies or the necessary funds to put together a drumline. My yearly budget is $100.00 which would not even cover the expense of one drum.
Our drumline would need four snare drums, two sets of tenor drums and four bass drums to get started. This activity will give these at -risk urban youths an opportunity to perform in a structured environment.
This project will bring pride, dignity, and the pure joy of performing in a musical group to many students who need a positive, self-esteem building activity in their lives.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
