I teach 5th grade students in poverty stricken urban school district that has been hit hard by our country's current economic situation.
LETS LOOK IT UP...But wait...We can’t! Why you ask???? Because in my class we own zero, yes ZERO, dictionaries.
Dictionaries are an important part of our curriculum ranging from learning the parts of a dictionary, to understanding the meaning of new words,to writing reports. Dictionaries are part of every writer's toolkit, like a carpenter's hammer and saw. And just like a carpenter, students can use this tool to construct a solid short story, a poem, an article, or even a book. Forget writer's block! If we owned a good set of dictionaries we’d never be stuck for a word. A class set of 25 dictionaries will help my 5th graders continue to develop their vocabulary and research skills, both of which help them inside of the classroom as well as in the future.
You can help my students by providing them with a tool that will be helpful in their everyday lives, and positively a necessity in any writer’s daily routine.
