I teach German to high school students in a school with a strong technology focus. I have dedicated students and several of them have gone on to study German at the college level. I currently have a young man who wants to be a German teacher! We have an exceptionally talented, caring staff and I couldn't imagine teaching anywhere else.
Our school received equipment through a state-funded grant. Even though world language is considered a core subject by the federal government through NCLB, our department received nothing from this grant and has had to rely on a district-wide technology budget that get stretched thin. I would like for my classroom to be able to keep up with the other subject areas who are constantly able to use multimedia to keep their students engaged. World language is one subject area where technology can bring the world to students who may not have the possibility to go there! Is anyone able to help?
In order to make my idea successful, I will need not only a projector, but an interactive whiteboard, speakers and a document camera, to be able to show pieces of realia that I have gotten on trips to Germany.
As I mentioned earlier, not all students will have the chance to study or travel abroad. With your help, the German-speaking world can be brought to my classroom and learning German can be more than grammar and vocabulary; it can be about how people live and really sound. Think back to your experiences in school with foreign languages. Wouldn't you have loved to have seen the culture as it happened? Your help can get my students much more engaged in learning about another language and culture and they would appreciate it so much
