I teach Spanish at a large urban high school n the Midwest. It is a wonderful place, full of young and inquisitive minds. Our school is making a concerted effort to ensure that all of our students are prepared for higher learning.
Foreign language is a challenge to many students. Spanish is not spoken at home and our students do not have the opportunity to practice outside of the classroom. Nor do they have the opportunity to travel to Latin America. We, as teachers, must make the Spanish-speaking world come alive in our classrooms. We bring food, watch videos, make crafts, perform plays, read poetry... These activities can be quite costly. Yet, as Spanish is not on standardized tests, we do not receive a lot of funding. So, we fundraise and fundraise and fundraise... Now we need a simple classroom staple, dictionaries. These dictionaries will assist the students with expanding their vocabulary and reading literature. They will help them to meet the language requirement and better prepare them for college.
We need 20 Spanish-English dictionaries. The students can check them out or use them in class. Using these dictionaries will increase their vocabulary and improve their reading comprehension in both Spanish and English. Dictionaries are a necessity in a foreign language classroom.
Foreign language is not going away. It is a requirement and a necessity. In today's global economy being bilingual opens countless doors. Help me prepare my students for the rigors of a college foreign language program. Please help us get these dictionaries!
