Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I currently teach Science at Middle School 390. MS 390 is located in the Bronx. Over 95% of our student population qualify for the free lunch program. Over 65% of our students are of Latino descent and about 30% or more are of African American descent.
Ever since I started teaching 4 years ago, I have strove to motivate my students and to connect their prior knowledge with the standard based concepts addressed in my class. Since the beginning of the year, I have taught after school to my students who are English Language Learners. As an English Language Learner myself, I feel there is a need for more academic resources that address students' interest and motivate them to further support their English language acquisition. It is for this same reason that I have decided to write this grant requesting a class set of 25 copies of the book "Sammy Sosa in Nine Innings" for a book club project in my after school class.
Recently, I had the privilege of meeting the author Julio C. Malone who gave me a copy of this great book, which includes his personal account on Sammy Sosa's life based on his experience as a peer who grew up with him in the same town in the Dominican Republic. I found this book inspiring and very useful in the socio-cultural context as it includes many historical references related to the Dominican Republic. I myself felt deprived of texts that appealed to my Dominican culture. I truly feel this would be a great cross-curricular and cross-cultural resource for all students.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
