My students need a variety of art supplies, such as patterned paper and a Seed Paper Flower Classroom Kit, in order to bring the WORLD to them and bring Social Studies and Science come alive.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. m.'s classroom raised $516
This project is fully funded
I work in a school where students are struggling for basic needs. However, they are still hungry for learning and mesmerized by culture, art, history, and being part of the global community--yet to most of them it seems impossible to be a part of something so seemingly large and out of reach. So, my job, while meeting standards and objectives, is to bring the World to them, make them feel a part of it, make them believe and understand that they ARE part of life and have a contribution to make. Hands on art projects, integrated into curriculum areas brings excitement, life, and true learning to my students. With a frozen teaching salary and my monies going to basic supplies, and the district not offering elementary visual arts....my students both NEED and DESERVE hands-on learning and access to visual arts and materials.
My fourth graders and I had an interesting discussion this past week. We talked about the difference between hands on learning and worksheet learning. They decided over the course of the conversation that there was a time and a use for worksheets, but that the times they manipulated, created, or researched a topic--they learned more and remembered it. Most importantly, they wanted to do more. They don't complain about what our school does not have, in fact, they are unaware. But when a new math game that requires logical thinking and manipulation is in the room or I take out an art medium they have not seen before....the room falls silent, yet with a feeling that we are all at the start line and if I said go the room would explode with excitement. Knowing that such simple solutions exist (supplies) and are just out of reach....that is the true meaning of children being left behind....when they are hungry to learn.
In fourth grade, we study the state of Arizona. We learn the history, about the ancient peoples, county seats, animals....you name it. The art supplies and resources requested will allow them to build historic Native American dwellings, create Arizona State Scrapbooks, create masks, build sculptures of important people in our state, make a 3-dimensional animals, weave baskets, create blankets on looms and more. In addition, they will have the chance to learn about art masters and do work in the style of the masters.
This is YOUR chance to IMPROVE the LIVES OF CHILDREN, IMPROVE EDUCATION, make sure NO CHILD IS LEFT BEHIND.....AND give students the opportunities that were given to you (or the opportunities you wish you had had). Not to mention, that research shows that students who engage in visual art instruction get higher test scores than those who have little or no exposure to visuals arts. WE WILL SEND YOU PHOTOS AND UPDATES...THANK YOU NOTES AND SMILES...but most of all YOU WILL KNOW YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
