Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school English at Hostos Lincoln Academy in Bronx, NY. The students generally associate reading with "boring" classroom texts or literature that is irrelevant to their lives. I would like to purchase 30 new books for my classroom library - 10 sets of 3 for each title from a list of recommended young adult literature. I plan to implement literature partnerships and groups so it is important to acquire more than one copy of each title. The goal is to spark a passion for reading by providing provocative books that resonate with young adults. The students, in addition to the materials covered in class, are required to read independently each night. With time, students build greater endurance for reading and come to school anxious to discuss their books with a group or partner. The mission is to develop a love for reading that will continue throughout high school and beyond.
