Basic Skills Tools for a Special Education Learning Center
My students need interesting and fun resources to engage their learning, tools to help them stay on task, and resources to help them actively learn and participate as I teach them, such as Phonics Flip Books, Money Bingo, and Place Value Pocket Chart Kit.

I am a special education Learning Center Teacher, and I provide my students and their families with a positive, fun place to learn. My students range in age from kindergarten through eighth grade. Our school, The school is a small magnet program in a large public urban district. Many of our students have special learning needs; I do my best to supplement the wonderful curriculum provided by the general education staff, and I often help students to catch up or learn skills they have not picked up along the way.
Because our curriculum is a constructivist approach, our lower-performing students do not always get direct instruction in reading and math skills - it is my job to help the students on special education plans get the foundational skills they need.
When I came to the school this year, the Learning Center did not have any learning materials available; I need manipulatives and motivational materials to provide students with many different ways of understanding concepts. My students who have autism, attention deficit disorders, and communication disorders are in need of multi-modal approaches; it may take a few different attempts to help a student learn a specific concept. These materials have been chosen with my specific students in mind.
I believe it is important for me to set up the Learning Center at our school so that it can be a resource to other teachers and staff and so that I can effectively provide the various learning approaches for my students without having to purchase the materials myself.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
