Hook My 6th Graders on Chinese

My sixth graders are among the few middle school students in New York who study Chinese, perhaps the only such students in a high-poverty community.

They are excited about the language, full of questions about the culture and eager to be able to communicate with Chinese speakers in their neighborhood. The enormous difficulty of the language, though, with its unfamiliar tonality and writing system, frustrates many of them, especially those who are not used to experiencing success in difficult subject areas. To make matters worse, the infrequency with which Chinese is taught to young learners in the U.S. means that my principal is unable to purchase curriculum resources for our class through our regular school vendors.

I would like to make Chinese accessible to my students this year by using materials suited to a variety of learning styles and interests. Engaging DVDs will engage both auditory and visual learners, and help them connect Chinese to pop culture - many of them already watch Ni Hao Kai Lan on Nickelodeon, and prove its effectiveness by reciting what they've learned to me each week. Picture dictionaries will allow students to form visual word memory, rather than relying on English translations. A class set of white boards will turn boring lessons on writing Chinese characters into fun, hands-on activities. Students will use the colorful index cards to make color-coded flash cards, in order to reinforce vocabulary learning at home. Colorfully illustrated books on Chinese culture will provide a window into the far-away world that we are studying. Finally, basic supplies like file folders and chart paper will allow me to create an organized, orderly classroom environment.

Studying Chinese expands my students' horizons beyond the bounds of their everyday experiences. It helps them build confidence, as they realize that they can master a difficult language that few others in their families and communities can speak.
