We read books, discuss ideas, draw graphs, interpolate, extrapolate, intellectually hug. I am an algebra teacher in a high-need community where our school's mission is a single word: college.
So much progress has been made regarding algebra instruction over the past decade. Much of it has to do with technology. What better way to teach slope then to show an animation of it constantly changing? My students became obsessed with graphing calculators last year, and this year we want to take it farther. We want to have whole-class discussions around some of the concepts illuminated by technology. To do this, we need something. Something we do not have.
This year, I teach five classes in four different classrooms. We cannot let this inconvenience, common to so many teachers in so many public schools, stop learning. I need something portable. I think of what an LCD projector would bring to our class and I get giddy. Students discussing concepts, debating ideas, all brought to life by software that we already have but unfortunately cannot project. This one tool can bring so much. Studies show students learn more when they are engaged. An LCD projector coupled with an effective lesson is a perfect match.
You can help us. You can raise our scores. You can do your part to eliminate the achievement-gap. We are working together as a community to nourish our most precious resource - young minds. An LCD projector is one tool that brings our school and community closer to our simple mission: college. Thank you so much for consideration.
