Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10th grade English at Progress High School in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Our curriculum is built around different thematic units and the students choose independent reading books from our class library. Homework is to read for at least 30 to 60 minutes a night.
Despite the spending of several hundred dollars on a class library this summer, the library isn't adequate or sustainable for the four sections of sophomores that share the books. Many of the students are already bored with the selection. On average, students are devouring a book a week! Most students have never been to a book store and many complain that their public library is too far from home or isn't open on the weekend. Many of my students have never been to Manhattan.
My desire is to give each student a ten dollar gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for a holiday class trip with the intention of stocking the class library. This would greatly benefit our library because it would add over a hundred student-selected books to our class library. Additionally, it would provide students with the experience of visiting and touring a book store.
There are a total of 112 students in my four 10th grade classes. The average cost of a young adult novel is around $8. My request is for 112, $10 gift certificates to Barnes and Noble. Barnes and Noble is particularly convenient due the accessible location in Union Square.
Thank you for your consideration!
