Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school in southeastern North Carolina. Most of my students are reading far below grade level. The majority of students are disinterested in reading, have difficulty making relevant connections to the content they read, and are visual learners. Many of the students I encounter have not mastered the English language.
I recently found out that I am teaching a student this year who has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Her teachers last year designed and presented an instructional unit on leukemia with the students. The student response was overwhelming!
I have selected this novel about a child with leukemia to read with my language arts class with the hopes that it will be high-interest literature relevant to our situation. But, this experience will entail so much more than reading. We are going to complete a community service learning project to donate money to the leukemia and lymphoma society.
Please help us to fight cancer! Help my students to understand the far-reaching impacts cancer has had on our society. And, help me to teach my students altruism and their responsibility to contribute to society.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
