Bringing music back to a middle school in rural GA!
subject: chorus
grades: 6, 7, 8
about the school: high need area, program is in rebuilding phase
I was hired this year with hopes that I might be able to rebuild a program that has been virtually dead for the past 6 years. The students are very excited, but there simply are very few resources. The picture on the profile is no exaggeration! There are no risers in the chorus room, the library is literally NON-EXISTENT, and there is no audio/visual equipment. We have a 19" (or so) television with poor sound and my own personal dvd player to assist whenever I want to show something to the class. To play audio media, there is a karaoke machine (left by the former director) that I use. If it weren't for my dry erase board, I don't know how we would function on a daily basis! It is GOLDEN in showing my students all that they need to know about reading and writing music. They are all very excited about music and I do my best each day to hide how little we actually have. They do such a wonderful job that I feel compelled to seek ways to offer them more.
I could use SO much in my classroom: a projector, audio equipment, RISERS, MUSIC...
My students would benefit from the requested materials in a HUGE way. Outside of my presence, a dry erase board, an old piano and determination, they don't have much. Yet, they enter each day with a drive and a spirit to make the best out of what is there. To offer such items would only make them work harder. It would give them the impression that SOMEONE out there cares about their success. A projector would be a great start in bringing forth some sort of advancement in teaching toward my visual learners. I could display visual media from my computer and my dvd player with clarity that ALL of my students could see well.
Music is such a VITAL part of developing young minds! It has been proved that when students get involved in a music program, their achievement goes up. When I accepted the position here, I knew that there would be challenges and deficits. I had no clue, however, that the students would impact me in the way that they have. They have so very little (VERY high reduced/free lunch rate), and it would mean so much to know that someone out there is willing to offer towards making their circumstances better.
Thank you (in advance) and whether or not you decide to help, I appreciate you taking the time to read our plight.
