Help save our watershed!
I teach a brand new advanced ecology class in Virginia. My students are juniors and seniors who desperately need to be challenged with a college level textbook. As a high poverty school, we don't have enough money to get new textbooks for this class but I desperately want them to be challenged this year as we intensely study the Chesapeake bay and the human impacts that affect it.
My students need an adequate textbook to coincide with my class being taught this year that focuses on the conservation of the Chesapeake bay by learning about the wonderful plants, animals, and ecology of Virginia. This class will be rigorous, and my students need to be challenged with a college level text. We're only asking for used copies as well. Additionally, we're working with a local college to actually do current fieldwork that will prepare my students for actual research. By the end of the year, they'll be bonafide scientists!
Too often students learn about distant things that live in jungles and rainforests where they'll probably never visit. With the help of this college text, we'll be able to appreciate the wealth of natural resources we have in our backyard. The current book we have is for a remedial level ecology class and won't challenge my students.
Being in a high poverty school district has major limitations on every teacher at our school. Our textbooks don't get replaced that often (every seven years) and our funding for virtually everything is quite strained. My colleagues and I have to write grants to get even basic materials like calculators. With your support, my advanced ecology students can be challenged instead of put to sleep with a text they mastered in the sixth grade. You'll be helping to excite and educate the next generation of American ecologists that this country desperately needs!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
