I teach third and fourth grade students with emotional disturbances. My school is located in a high poverty area and my students do not have access to a lot of technology. The community loves our school and my students, although challenging, make coming to school a joy. I am always looking for ways to incorporate technology and real life applications to keep my students motivated and increase their learning.
By the time my students reach my classroom, they have typically been "put out" of at least 2 other classes. I feel it is my job to give back to these students who so often are faced with being the "have-nots" rather than the "haves". My students have emotional disturbances and are often faced with the stereotypes of their disabilities, however my students are bright, empathetic, and loving...they just need someone to give them a chance.
My classroom is very small and lacks modern materials for my students to use. In an increasingly electronic age, my students would benefit from becoming familiar with the technology that will touch every part of their lives. The TAG reader set allows the students to "independently" read by placing the special pen on special books and hear the word. The books also include games and skill tests, which I can monitor student progress through. The TAG system provides a fun, engaging and motivating way to assist struggling readers in a new, technology rich way.
The Tag System I am requesting would help my students, who are struggling readers, who groan when I mention reading time, be able to "independently read" and enjoy reading. I truly believe that this system will motivate my students and challenge them in a fun way that will transform my students from non-readers to book-lovers!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
