This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my low socio-economic first grade students spend a majority of their free time at home in front of a video game or television. They cannot afford to go to gymnastics classes where they learn balance. Integrating physical education into the curriculum, and additionally balance, is a high priority in my classroom.
We currently have quite a bit of equipment because of a state-wide grant from a few years back. But one area of need for first graders is learning how to balance their bodies and to feel that balance.
I believe a great addition to our P.E. equipment would be 2 balance beams. When we have P.E. centers, such as bouncing a basketball, jumping rope, hopping over cones, we could now have balance beams for them to use. This would develop their sense of balance and coordination which is an important ability at this age.
With a set of balance beams for the first graders, they could add to their developing skills of bouncing, hopping, jumping, and skipping. It is one of those skills that unless you are in a gymnastics class gets overlooked.
