Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math and science classes for grades 6-8 in a middle school in Los Angeles. My students are in a contained special education class for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities (such as significant reading delays) and a few who have autism spectrum disorder.
My students are missing out; they don't get electives because they are all classified as "English Learners" and so have a double block of English instruction. Over the years I have included enrichment in my math classes through art projects that have been featured at our school's annual art festival. The teachers who organize it are always blown away by the contributions of my classes and I give my kids ALL the credit; I may facilitate it, but if they weren't serious about art and weren't able to connect it to their math learning, it just wouldn't work. Now I want to branch out a little, into music.
All that stuff about music making you "smarter" isn't the whole story... it's not the listening to music that brings lasting results, but making and learning to play music that truly increases cognitive functioning. Music is mathematical; it teaches fraction operations as well as pattern recognition (important for algebra and developing problem-solving skills). It also teaches good reading techniques (the brains of fluent readers look ahead at words to come while comprehending the words being read at any given moment). Finally, if my students are willing, they will be included in the winter posada celebration program as well as the spring arts festival. This will give them heaps of self-confidence and make them more enthusiastic learners than ever before--you can count on it!
Your kind help will provide my students with a class set of recorders, a metronome, desk stands to hold music, and 2 rolling storage systems to store and transport it all in addition to take-home kits, other musical supplies and equipment. One thing I'll do is create take-home practice kits from supplies I already have on hand (because recorders are so inexpensive, I'll encourage students to buy their own).
If you love music or performance, or just love the IDEA of music and performance, this project is for you. Because of your donations, my students will be able to make their creative mark on the world (or at least on our school!) while enhancing their abilities to learn and overcome their learning difficulties. Thank you so much!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
