I teach Spanish and coach bowling in a large urban high school. It is a wonderful place, full of young, eager and inquisitive minds as well as fantastic athletes and bowlers. It is a wonderful school with fabulous students. However, in today's climate of budget cuts, sports, the arts, and other extra-curricular activities are suffering. Many are being cut. Our bowling team is on the chopping block. We need your help to be able to continue.
Statistics show that students who are involved in their schools do better academically. They are far more likely to go on to college than those who are uninvolved. They may even earn bowling scholarships. However, to compete at an elite level each bowler must have his own equipment. It will enable them to practice with less cost to themselves, and ensure that they improve. A true bowler has his own gear.
These young men live in an area where gangs and violence are commonplace. Yet they go to school everyday, get good grades and participate in extra-curricular activities like bowling, football and volleyball. They need this alternative to the streets. However, bowling is not an inexpensive sport; they simply cannot afford to purchase all of the gear that they need. Our school struggles with poverty everyday. These young men struggle to purchase their school supplies; bowling shoes are definitely a luxury. They truly need your help.
Becoming master bowlers could open doors to colleges and universities. We are already really good, and we bowl with house balls. I believe that many of the boys could qualify for a scholarship. Most would make a college team. Being involved in a team while in college would increase their stake in the school and heighten their possibility of successfully graduating from a four year college or university.
I have an excellent bowling team. We took first place last year, bowling with house balls. They are great students and even better bowlers. In order to become excellent bowlers they need their own equipment. They need to practice with their own balls, drilled to fit their hands. To be competitive they need their own equipment. This is a cost that is simply impossible for them or the school to cover.
My students cannot afford to purchase their own equipment. They cannot even afford the $3.00 shoe rental fee once a week. More importantly, they cannot afford to lose the opportunity to become master bowlers. It could open many doors for them in the future. All they need is a ball, shoes, a bag, and your tremendous generosity. Thank you for thinking of us!
