Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Social Studies teacher at an at-risk high school in Nevada. I teach both United States Government and Advanced Placement Government. Nevada has one of the worst school systems in the nation, but this is not because of the children. While I work at a college preparatory high school, the graduation rate is below fifty percent. Over the last two years, the governor of our state has cut over three hundred million dollars from our district budget alone. With budgets being cut, sometimes it is difficult to get basic classroom supplies. Items that are considered to be special orders or that are over one thousand dollars often are not funded.
As the world becomes more technologically advanced, I would like to be able to incorporate this technology into my classroom. Unfortunately, my school does not have enough money to purchase this new technology. Our money goes toward the basics of providing textbooks for the students. I believe that the key to achievement is to use a variety of teaching techniques to engage them in their own learning and to include technology into each lesson. If students are engaged and enjoy coming to school, the graduation rate will increase and more student will be successful in life.
My students have shown interest in history and multimedia, yet we lack the resources to allow the students to investigate history on their own using this technology. History and the results of historical events surround the student's lives everyday and while they may notice these events, they never make the connections. With the appropriate materials, these teachable moments can become class-wide lessons. With the small and portable FLIP cameras from Pure, students will be able to easily carry and videotape their historical surroundings daily. Students will be able to download any footage or interviews that they have shot and take control of not only their own learning but their peers in class as well.
The resources afforded by the grant will set student projects in motion and promote a collaborative effort among myself and my students to create student produced films to use for classroom assignments via the FLIP camcorders. What students produce with their own hands lends a sense of permanence and ownership in the creative process. This makes the assignment more meaningful to them and thus increases student achievement.
Without your support, student video projects will never be more than just an idea. In our district where free and reduced lunch rates hover over thirty-five percent for my high school, our students too often discover ideas that never come to fruition. I am excited to offer this service to my students. Your help will ensure the purchase of the tools necessary for students to produce and critique video assignments and projects, claim ownership in the creative process that is both practical and purposeful, and perhaps pave the way for a career in video production. These projects will also increase student achievement which is greatly needed in the state of Nevada.
My students need 4 Pure FLIP camcorders, 4 storage pouches, 2 battery chargers, and a USB cable kit.
