Have you ever touched something and it turned to chocolate? Have you ever ate a fried worm? I teach third grade students in a high-need, low socioeconomic community. Throughout the school year, my students and I like to read chapter books as a class.
Students in my district do not get to experience many things outside of school. Many of my students have never been on a school bus, to a movie theater, or to the mall. My students do not have clean clothes or get to eat dinner when they get home. When my students walk into my classroom, I like to take them on adventures and trips through the gift of reading.
In order to keep my students engaged and enjoy reading, I need to find stories that are interesting. These three chapter books will be books that my students can enjoy in class and at home for many, many years.
I am a twenty-six year old teacher and I struggled with reading when I was in elementary school. When I was in third and fourth grade, my classes read "How To Eat Fried Worms," "Shiloh," and "Chocolate Touch." To this day, I still have the chapter books and the memories are vivid in my mind. I want my students to experience the joy of reading. Even though not all students like to read, these chapter books will engage them and hopefully change their minds. You will also make it possible for my students to take books home to keep. Their families do not have very much money and it is rare for my students to purchase things they want. Your help will ensure that my students will get to leave third grade with three chapter books for them to keep.
