My students need five copies of the following books: "Tyrell" by Coe Booth, "Kendra" also by Booth, "The First Part Last" by Angela Johnson, "Homeboyz" by Lawrence Sitomer, and "Life in Prison" by Stanley Tookie Williams. In addition, I have also requested one copy of "Blue Rage, Black Redemption: A Memoir of Stanley Tookie Williams" to be used as a supplemental text, and an MP3 copy of "The First Part Last" to aid struggling readers.

I teach eighth grade language arts in a diverse urban school district. I am truly a lucky teacher, because my students love to read!
My students' favorite part of language arts class is Book Clubs. Groups of students select a text to read, discuss, and analyze together. Choice of reading material is an integral part of Book Club, so it is necessary to have high-interest books on hand that students will WANT to read. My district has provided many excellent books that the students enjoy, but they read them so fast that I run out of books to give them! My students and I are resourceful -- we borrow additional books from school and town libraries, and purchase some titles. However, it is sometimes difficult to find multiple copies of the books we need at affordable prices.
The resources I've requested will give my students more options when they are choosing books. Previous students have enjoyed these titles and I think they will be a hit!
The more students read, the more their reading fluency improves. This means better grades in all classes, higher standardized test scores, and -- most importantly -- a lifelong ability to comprehend, analyze, and evaluate information in texts. By donating to this proposal, you can help children develop skills that will make them more productive and independent... not only for this school year, but for the rest of their lives.
