Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my 7th grade students have confided in me during one-on-one conversations that their parents cannot afford to purchase their school supplies. I asked my students to bring in 1 1/2" binders and filler paper to keep our reading and writing work organized this year. Only a small handful of students have complied with those instructions. Some continue to come to class empty-handed, while others bring in beaten up, handed down binders of varying sizes and shapes, most without folder pockets.
Our school is an "in need of improvement" middle school located in Spanish Harlem. It is my first year teaching there, but it hasn't taken me long to pick up on the void of school pride or sense of ownership. The students regularly refer to the school as "ghetto" and "broke" because they notice the peeling paint on the walls and the insufficient supplies. I'm doing everything I can in my classroom to brighten up the environment and build my students' confidence in their school and in themselves.
I am seeking a donation of 70 1 1/2" 3-ring binders and 70 packages of lined filler paper. (I teach approximately 70 students total throughout the day.) Nothing fancy. Just the basic economy style binder and lowest cost filler paper available. It is extremely important to me that my students take pride in their work, as we pour so much effort into building their reading and writing skills. Something as simple as having a well-kept binder can go such a long way in the way they perceive themselves as students. By the end of the year, the binders will be filled with reading journals, memoirs, persuasive essays, poetry... you name it!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
