We are taking a pro-active approach to curb unhealthy decisions.
Our charter school opens the door back into the world of education. Our students, ages 13-20, are identified as at-risk for a variety of reasons. Some are high school dropouts, some are credit deficient, and some are here because their behavior has interrupted their educational path. For these reasons, traditional high schools find it difficult to accommodate these students and we are able to better meet their needs and provide individualized learning plans.
There are many obstacles facing our 200 students. One such obstacle is making healthy choices and living a healthy lifestyle. We have decided to change our health curriculum to a more project based curriculum. This past year, we had 40 teen-age parents, many who face financial and health care burdens, along with the lack of family support. When talking to our teen parents, many of them tell me they thought this is how life has to be, partly because their parents were also teen parents. Our goal is to provide information how to prevent pregnancy and end this cycle.
Another challenge facing our students is realizing that the choices they make today can affect their future. Many of our students fail to see how their negative behavior and unhealthy lifestyle hinder their ideal job, their longevity, or their basic freedoms. Our new health curriculum focuses on anger management, wellness, nutrition, and healthy relationships.
Throughout the school year, we serve close to 200 students. On any given day, our one-room classroom will accommodate up to 40 students, each working on their individualized learning plans. The nature of our classroom is the reason we ask for 2 portable DVD players along with noise reduction headphones. This way, students can watch one of our 2 DVDs incorporated into our curriculum without interrupting other students.
We also ask for poster board. We have included a variety of assessment activities, like drawing, making a collage, or painting pictures. Due to the large number of students and our limited amount of space, helping students stay organized must be a priority. This is why we hope to receive individual folders. This way, students can keep materials at school.
With your generosity, our students will have to tools to understand the cycle of making unhealthy decisions can stop with them. Our students need to be given a chance to work at their ideal job, live long and healthy lives, and benefit from the basic freedoms they are entitled to.
